7 nights, 5 full days of riding, 1 beach rest day
Trek through the ecologically diverse mountains of Nicoya and along three secluded Pacific coast beaches.
This trek features comfortable accommodations at a mountain eco lodge, a boutique hotel, a five-star resort and an ocean front villa. We will be having meals and spending one of the nights along the way with local families where you can enjoy some Costa Rican hospitality. Enjoy beautiful trails through the mountains, plus three full days of beach riding. The mountains of Nicoya host a great variety of plants and animals. Along the way you are likely to see tucans, parrots, and Scarlet Macaws as well as several types of monkeys. This trek is appropriate for all level of riders.
The journey begins in the historical town of La Mansion, in the district of Nicoya, settled in 1891 by a group of 100 Cuban families lead by Antonio Maceo. We will spend the first night in a beautifully restored hacienda.
This is a spectacular journey through parts of Costa Rica not seen by many tourists and full of the natural beauty unique to the Nicoya Peninsula.
“I love horse back riding and therefore love nature but I’m a city girl and there is only
a certain amount of nature I can take. This trip was the perfect combination of pure nature and comfort. Every day we spent 4-7 hours in the saddle, every day we saw the most beautiful views, trails and beaches. Every evening we got our suitcases and had a nice shower and bed. Every day there were surprises and I just loved it and can’t wait to be able to do it again. Thank you, Liz and Jorge for a trip of a life time.”

Day 1: Pick up Liberia International Airport. Drive for one hour to La Grama Farm in the town of La Mansion de Nicoya. Relax in a beautifully restored Costa Rican hacienda. Let the peaceful surroundings help you unwind from your flight. This is when you can meet your horse and try out the tack.
If you are combining this trek with a Parelli workshop, plan for the next two days of workshop and then head out on the trek on “Day 2” listed below.
Day 2: Depart from La Grama Farm and ascend over 800 feet into the lush green mountains, to high peaks with extensive views. This will be a short day with only around 3-4 hours in the saddle. We will arrive in time for lunch at the Rio Nosara Resort. After lunch you can visit the nature reserve of Monte Alto and take a walk on any of the well maintained trails that wind through the forest. This is also a great chance to see all the native wildlife, visit the indigenous community of Matambú, or relax poolside with a cocktail at Rio Nosara Resort.
Day 3: Riding further into the mountains for another 3-4 hours in the saddle and ascending another 550 feet, we arrive at the Eco Farm of Salto del Calvo for lunch. After lunch you have the choice of descending towards the coast via switchbacks down a steep mountain to a waterfall and swimming hole, or meandering down a secluded mountain lane towards San Pedro de Hojancha. This town has been the leader in the change from extensive cattle farming and grain production to reforestation, as evidenced by the many tree farms that we pass along the way. Far from any tourist areas we will experience true Costa Rican hospitality when we spend the night in the home of a local family.
Day 4: Begin the day ascending the dense tropical forest towards a high ridge overlooking the entire coastline. After taking in the views we head down the Pacific coast slopes to the 5 star resort Punta Islita, one of the most exclusive and famous hotels in Costa Rica. Enjoy the great service, relax by the pool, or go for a walk on the beach.
Day 5: After a great breakfast at the beautiful hotel restaurant, we will saddle up and head towards playa San Miguel – one of the most undeveloped beaches on the entire coast line. After lunch expect to ride on this secluded wild beach and cross an estuary to make it to our beach front villa for the night.
Day 6: Wake up to the waves at our beach front villa, where we have a rest day. Today is the day to enjoy our horses on the beach. We ride bareback, play in the surf, and enjoy the luxury of our beautiful home on the beach.
Day 7: We ride down the beach to our final destination, crossing two estuaries along the way. Arrive at sunset to the boutique hotel, where you will appreciate the artistic beauty of Casa Caletas, situated on the beach at the mouth of an estuary. Tropical birds and wild life are abundant at this unique location.
Day 8: We say goodbye to our horses and head home ourselves. Transport back to the airport can be arranged through the hotel. You may wish to extend your vacation and book a few extra days at this great beach location or explore more of Costa Rica on your own.
This trek is also available, without a workshop, at any time during the year. Cost: $2,200
Treks combined with Parelli workshops can be selected with out attending the workshop.
