Barking Horse Farm’s rustic beauty and open air tropical living brings you close to nature. You can watch the horses in the pastures out of every window in the home. The farm, located in one of the most beautiful and rural mountainous areas of Costa Rica, has wonderful trail riding, rushing rivers and waterfalls within walking distance and delicious food and yet is only an hour away from the main international airport (SJO).
When we came to Costa Rica 10 years ago, we traveled all over the country looking for a place to build our home, a place with beautiful mountains, streams and rivers, wildlife, and great trails for riding. We found it here in Puriscal. The area surrounding the farm has some of the most stunning mountain views we have seen anywhere in Costa Rica. There are miles and miles of old ox-cart roads, trails through private farms and quiet country roads for riding on. The trails take us to rushing rivers with waterfalls and swimming holes, along mountain ridges with 360 degree views and through dense tropical forests filled with birds and other wildlife.
The main house is designed with tropical living in mind. The open floor plan allows for natural cooling by the tropical breezes. The warm wood construction invites relaxation. It is a place where every one feels at home.
The four bedrooms in the main farm house are equipped with either two twin beds or one double bed. They are located on the shaded side of the house which keeps them cool and comfortable. There are two bathrooms, a conventional one inside the home and an innovative composting one outside. There are also two showers, one inside plus a private outside shower, both with hot water.
There is a forested area on the farm where you can stay in a 30 foot diameter octagonal structure built from tropical hardwoods and positioned high in the tree tops. More than a tree house we call it our Dream Catcher Tree House. It has a fully equipped kitchen, a separate master bed room and 1 and 1/2 baths.
Barking Horse Farm has lots of farm animals including goats, chickens, ducks , geese, rabbits, dogs and cats. Families in particular love the farm animals and the relaxed atmosphere of the farm.
The food at Barking Horse Farm is served family style in the country kitchen. Enjoy home made tortillas and Costa Rican specialties like empanadas. Also provided are a variety of American and International cuisine.
The farm has an active volunteer program where young people from all over the world come together with a common interest in horses. Share their experiences and energy at meal time and other times through out your stay.
