February Trek to the Beach

Click to view slideshow. In the first week of February we ran a trek to the beach with the 5 white horses. Joining us were folks from Idaho and Toronto. Every one enjoyed each others company, the horses, the scenery, and the locals we met along the way.

David Lichman’s January Workshop and Trek

Click to view slideshow.David’s 5th time back with us was just as much fun as ever. David came to the farm the day before the trek to help us with choosing our horses and our “preflight checks”. The trek took us through the beautiful Costa Rican country side. We stayed with local families along the way, swam in rivers (with the horses too!), visited a chocolate farm, soared through the air on a zipline (not with the horses), cantered on the beach and swam with the horses in the ocean. We met David at the beach for two more days of workshop.

We learned to use the porcupine game in lots of new ways, how to use “scan and capture” as a training technique, we played at liberty and learned the boomerang game, we practiced our carrot stick riding and had fun synchronizing to music and much much more.

Thank you David for a great workshop. You are an awesome and FUN teacher!!!! And thank you to the trekers who made the trip a great one!!

Come spend time with TWO 3-Star Licensed Parelli Professionals for an intensive, educational and fun filled weekend at Barking Horse Farm in Costa Rica! The farm offers a 7 day, 6 night trek from the mountains to the sea and the two days prior will be filled with clinic style teaching from Maurice and Susan. We will have two instructors and two groups of people learning at the same time. Throughout the weekend, the clinic will have dynamic sessions on improving your on-line and riding skills, regardless of what level you are playing with. Plus, we will be having theory and simulation sessions to really make it a complete experience for all in attendance. There will be 12 hours of play and learning time over these two days…plus the bonus of having two instructors for the entire weekend! After the workshop ride out with Susan and Maurice on an adventure through rural Costa Rica. Practice the Parelli you love with beautiful, well cared for, Parelli trained horses, while exploring one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. Space is limited so don’t miss out!

Instructors for our Costa Rica 2012 Parelli Workshop/Treks

We have some great instructors joining us for the 2012 riding season. We always love welcoming back David Lichman, 5* instructor. David will be returning for the fourth time in January. We look forward every year for his arrival. His workshops are up beat and fun, full of laughs and learning. 4* Nita Jo Rush has 15 years experience teaching Parelli. She loves combining the natural power and wisdom of Parelli with riding out, whether in rugged mountains or pristine beaches–and looks forward to teaching and joining her students for an unforgettable experience in Costa Rica. In March we welcome 3* Kerri April. With 30 years of horse training and riding experience under her belt, we are all looking forward to learning from her. In April, our final workshop/trek will be led by 3* instructor Christine Madoni.

Horseback Ride from Barking Horse Farm to Alturas de Puriscal

Click to view slideshow. On Monday we set out on a ride to our friends’ Patsy and Bob place. Patsy and Bob have a Bed and Breakfast on their beautiful 300 acre working farm. Alturas de Puriscal has a coffee plantation an orange orchard, dairy cows and pigs and of course beautiful horses. Patsy came to Barking Horse Farm and six of us headed out to find the trails to her place. On the way we passed though private farms and then we rode right through a suburban neighborhood. The horses loved Alturas de Puriscal, especially our water loving Beau who took a mud bath in the pond! Patsy made us a delicious meal and we all slept well in our spacious, artistically decorated rooms. In the morning we headed out to the magical Poso Cajon where once again Beau went for a swim, this time in the lagoon there. We back on country roads through small towns all the way home. It was a fun trip and now we know the way to Patsy’s house!

The Cabalgata for Mari Cruz Belen

Click to view slideshow. One of the nicest horse events that happen in Costa Rica is the Cabalgata. This is a fund raising event on horseback. Horse owners are invited on a trail ride through private farms,they are given a meal, and they have a chance to win horse equipment at a raffle. These are organized by communities to raise money for a school, or a community center among other things. This particular event was held to raise money for Mari Cruz Belen. Mari Cruz is a Special Olympics Cyclist from our town of Puriscal who has been chosen to go to Greece to compete in the Special Olympics Competition.

The horses (and riders) from Establo San Rafael and Barking Horse Farm were invited to attend so Brenda, Liz, Olivia and our two horse interns Erin and Kristin decided to go and show our support for Mari Cruz. We headed out from the farm and climbed up to the ridge on the back roads. When we got there we noticed the rain clouds forming in the distance and sure enough, just as the horses were setting out on the cabalgata the skies opened up in a deluge of tropical rain. It rained through the whole ride! We couldn’t take a single picture to show what a picturesque route the cabalgata followed. Of course, as we arrived back at the festivities the rain stopped. We all enjoyed the local food provided for the participants and we won prizes in the raffle!! We all rode home happy and, thanks to our colorful rain ponchos, not too wet.

Click to view slideshow. This was a great trip because we rode with all very accomplished Parelli riders. We ended the trip with a two day workshop with David Lichman. We are currently putting together the trek and workshop schedule for 2012. We are happy to be having 5 star Parelli instructor DavidLichman back for a 4th time in January and 4 star Parelli instructor Nita Jo Rush for her first trek and workshop in February. We will have the exact dates as time gets closer. We are in the process of arranging the schedule for a trek and workshop with other Parelli instructors in March and April. Riding Beau Bridleless

Click to view slideshow. We are having a great time riding Beau with out reins in the ring. He stops with only the leg commands and stays relaxed and calm in all the gaits. This is great for a right brain introvert that he is. Doing this has also helped him stay calm and pay attention when he is out on trail rides. We love Beau!
