– I’m still talking about the trip and it is STILL a trip of a lifetime! I loved the trip and all the components that made up the trip. I think some of my most favorite parts were the lunch with Dona Rosa and Teresa on top of the mountain, being with the horses in the pasture on the hill, the scenery all over the place, staying in the ecolodge, riding on the beach, the cabins on the beach (heck, everything!). The food was fabulous! And the best part, was getting to see the “real” Costa Rica. I love that we didn’t deal with any tourista stuff, even when we were in Puriscal, it wasn’t so tourista-ish.
The trip was unique, special in terms of all the possible trips a person could make in this world, and I appreciate the hard work and preparation required to share this wonderful experience with all of us.
“Our time at the Barking Horse Farm was rich with tactile and spiritual experiences, food for the soul, as they say. We saw our 2 1/2-year-old daughter blossom each day with new confidence and understanding of the world around her. She learned so much from interacting with the many animals living together on the farm.
We took her horseback riding each morning, hiked to a nearby waterfall, visited other active farms, and joined their Barking Horse family in making meals, including a festive “pizza night” . We helped doing basic chores like collecting the chicken eggs, which we often cooked right up for our daughter’s snack. We took long, wonderful trail rides through the Costa Rican countryside. The organic nature of the farm provides a very peaceful, yet active environment where you can really remember to live by your own natural clock. Go! Be reawakened. We had the best holiday we have ever had, it was just fabulous. We were taken in as members of the family, fed marvelously, and Ray (8) was welcomed in by the group of 4 really wonderful home-schooled children. At night we slept in the wonderful treehouse, and heard birds and animals all around us. I can’t recommend this too highly — especially for families (and perhaps most esp. for single parents.) There are animals everywhere, puppies, goats (milked morning and night), cats, ducks, geese, chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs and of course the horses, all gleaming and happy. This is not the tourist area of Costa Rica and Elizabeth, Brenda and their families are well integrated into the local community; the children are all bi-lingual in English and Spanish; and we got to see some wonderful things; sugar being boiled from cane, local rodeos and horse-breeders etc. Ray and I both cried to come home, and can’t wait to go back. It really was a life-altering experience, I am starting saving immediately for a return trip (I don’t want to go anywhere else in the world but back there asap!) Juliet

The farm atmosphere brings you close to nature. I like watching my kids experience and communicate with all the animals. Animals really help autistic kids. The kids are so gleefull. This kind of connection is something that they just don’t get in their daily life at home. It makes them so happy to have all the animals around. The way everything is all around you, the garden, the animals, and making all the food from scratch is like going back in time to the house on the prairie days when life was simple. It brings out the inner side of your self that you lose in modern day life. Your creativity can thrive. Candace

We wanted to Thank you so very much for the best vacation ever. The kids are still talking about the farm all most everyday. I have never had a better riding experience then with you. We will be back for sure. Nicole, from Chicago I am still experiencing “after glow”. What a trip! Tell Mr. Socks I still have faith he will overcome his bad habits. What a sweetheart he was otherwise. Liz & Olivia, thank you for one of the most memorable trips of our lifetimes. Karen and Sarah

- Nuala, from Edinburgh, Scotland
I traveled around the world for a whole year with my family and Barking Horse Farm was my favorite place of all.

Sequoia, from San Diego, California
I liked catching the chickens. Before I came to Barking Horse Farm I had only seen pigs in movies and books.

Sierra, from San Diego, California
I had a good time. I got to milk a goat for the first time. I got to make the horse trot when I wanted it to and I had never seen a pig before.
